The Rig Veda (ऋग्वेद) is the oldest of the four Vedas and one of the most ancient religious texts in the world. Composed in Vedic Sanskrit by the Rishis (sages) of ancient India, it is a collection of 1,028 hymns (Suktas) organized into 10 books called Mandalas. These hymns are addressed to various deities — Agni (fire), Indra (king of gods), Soma (sacred plant), Varuna (cosmic order), Surya (sun), and many others.
